Panama Canal Expansion Halted Due to Unresolved Dispute

An unresolved dispute between the Panama Canal Authority and one of its contractors halted progress when Italy’s Salini Impregilo, a consortium that has been building the third set of locks for the waterway, requested an additional $1 billion dollars due to flawed geological studies carried out by the authority. Melted Ice Now Allows Carrier Ships to Traverse the Northwest Passage

In early September 2013, the Nordic Orion, a 75,000-ton Danish-owned cargo ship saved 1,000 nautical miles and $80,000 in fuel costs and was able to carry 15,000 tons more coal by traversing the Northwest Passage rather than would have been possible had it traveled through Panama Canal*. Due to the rare ice-melt, this route is new to the shipping world. So new, in fact, that there isn’t a lot of clarity on whether the waters of the passage are international or Canadian.
