Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort (MCAS Beaufort) encompasses 6,900 acres and is associated with a large air-to-air combat area off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia as well as a 5,200‑acre (21‑km²) air-to-ground combat and bombing range in McIntosh County, Georgia. MCAS Beaufort is bounded by rivers, estuaries, and saltwater marshes and lies near a vast, undisturbed wilderness area known as the Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto Basin Preserve, which consists of 134,000 protected acres of diverse estuarine communities. The bulk fuel pier supplying fuel for MCAS Beaufort operations is located on Brickyard Creek, which is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway just north of Albergottie Creek.
A sediment evaluation was needed prior to dredging the fuel pier area to provide information required for authorization of dredge material disposal in accordance with Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. ANAMAR was contracted by USACE to perform sampling activities in the project area. ANAMAR coordinated and directed operations for this project, subcontracted vibracore sampling and laboratory analyses, and prepared final report deliverables. ANAMAR reviewed all data and produced a report summarizing the results of the physical and chemical analysis of sediment samples collected from the project area.
