The Tide Swamp Unit and the Jena Unit are two of the five units that comprise Big Bend WMA. The Tide Swamp Unit borders the Gulf of Mexico just north of the Steinhatchee River in southwestern Taylor County. This 19,538-acre unit consists primarily of hydric hammock, pine flatwoods, and coastal marshes. The Jena Unit stretches along the Gulf of Mexico south of the Steinhatchee River to just south of Horseshoe Beach in western Dixie County. This 12,552-acre unit is comprised of a mix of high salt marsh, sandhill, mixed hardwood and pine forests along the coastline.
The survey was performed by two senior scientists from ANAMAR and was conducted by a combination of vehicle and pedestrian surveys. Field guides and taxonomic references were used to confirm species identification, and all observed exotic plant occurrences were mapped via handheld GPS.
