Section 103 Sediment Evaluation, Northeast Cape Fear River Turning Basin and North Carolina State Port Authority (NCSPA), Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington Harbor is a federal navigation project located along the Cape Fear and Northeast Cape Fear Rivers in southeastern North Carolina.  The purpose of the dredging project was to enhance commercial shipping along the Cape Fear River, Northeast Cape Fear River, and the State Port in Wilmington, North Carolina.  This sediment evaluation included two project areas: (1) new-work dredging for the proposed relocated Northeast Cape Fear River Turning Basin and (2) maintenance dredging for NCSPA Berths in the Cape Fear River.

ANAMAR was contracted by USACE to perform sampling activities for a Section 103 sediment evaluation.  The purpose of this project was to collect and analyze sediment, site water, and elutriate samples from specified project locations for physical, chemical, and toxicological parameters.  The objective was to determine the suitability of the material for ocean disposal in the Wilmington ODMDS as required under the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act of 1972 (MPRSA).

This project involved a combination of grab sampling and vibracore sampling.  ANAMAR coordinated and directed operations for this project and worked closely with USACE to design sampling and analysis schemes, perform sample collection, subcontract vibracoring services and laboratory analysis, and prepare final report deliverables.  ANAMAR reviewed all data and produced a report summarizing the results of the physical, chemical, and toxicological analyses of sediment, elutriate, water, and tissue samples of the proposed dredge material collected from the project area.
